Note #3
Misconceptions and stereotypes exist due to the the lack of knowledge or understanding about a particular subject. Ignorance and insularity play a big part in the propagation of these fallacies.
India, the country I hail from is very large and diverse so naturally there are many aspects of it which are misunderstood. I will be addressing a particular misconception which has arisen over the last few years - most Indians work in the IT field.
The IT sector has boomed over the last few years and has attracted many Indians- mostly from the urban middle class as it offers a lucrative and prestigious job profile. But do most Indians work in IT?
That is a major exaggeration. In India, nearly half the population of working age is employed in the agriculture sector. The IT sector employs nearly 9 million people so roughly 1 in 54 members of the workforce are employed by the IT sector.
So next time you meet an Indian, don't assume they work with computers.
